What a nightmare! I actually groaned when reading it. My shop is in a concrete basement but there are old copper water pipes running along the ceiling ... so I can easily imagine your horror.

Lovely tool collection! Will you make tool chests or tool cupboards (or both)? Either way, I'm looking forward to reading about it. Please take many pictures!

Yeah, it was definitely discouraging, but it’s turned out not too bad in the end. None of the tools were lost, and that’s the main thing.

As far as tool storage, I haven’t decided whether to build wall mounted cabinets or something more like a tool chest. I see advantages and disadvantages to both. I plan on taking several weeks to do some research on tool storage before making a decision. I guess that research will make for an article or two, as well!

Looking forward to it!

If I may offer an opinion? You don't want to bend over double each time you need a tool!

Hope there wasn't too much damage to the rest of the house? When I was younger I worked as a carpenter for several years, mostly with 'insurance-jobs'; fixing water-damage, mostly kitchens and bathrooms, obviously. It quickly gets expensive when the water flows!

Live well!

That is a valid piece of advice. In my mind I love the idea of a toolchest. I am often called upon to do fine work outside of my shop, the type of work for which you cannot always anticipate what tools you may need. A chest lends itself to that kind of work. But, I once built a joiners chest on castors, and it wasn’t the bending over that frustrated me. Instead, it was the temptation to store and stack workpieces on the closed chest, and when it came time to reach for a tool, I had a stack of material to move somewhere. So, the storage capacity and consolidated nature of a chest appeals to me, but the practical application of a chest was unsatisfactory the last time I tried it.
